Winner of the Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prize, LA GRADIVA follows a class of French high school students who travel to Pompeii to discover ruins and bodies petrified by Vesuvius. In a rare moment when the force of youth meets a world frozen in time, the adolescents’ desires start to surface with unexpected intensity, and they hurtle toward an irreversible fracture. With vivid, textural cinematography and sharply observed dialogue, Marine Atlan evokes the alluring heat of the Italian landscape in her feature debut, while brilliantly excavating complex social hierarchies and covert romantic entanglements. A 1-2 Special release.
