I forgot how meta this movie is (parent company Warner Bros.), and how the issues of then are really still the same today, only even more obvious to everybody: control vs freedom and illusions of choice. I now realise more why Smith and Morpheus didn't need to look like they did before. It would have been too obvious to Neo to make Smith look like his old self (I doubt Hugo Weaving would have come back) and it made sense the "real" Morpheus would have died from old age by the time this story takes place.
