There’s an interesting idea in bringing Ian Malcolm into center stage for this one, especially as there’s some bigger ideas about his past and his relationship with his daughter, which also leads to the film’s most unexpected emotional scene. And then there’s the parallels with the T-Rex family unit. Though it feels like any richness of character and subtext exploration and payoff is dropped quickly just to get to the scene we - and Spielberg especially - wanted to see: T-Rex in San Diego. Overall, this is pretty sub par for a Spielberg flick (reported that he lost interested halfway through making the film), but still carries some key moments that remind you where we are — those beautifully blocked, Spielberg-patented, character realizations.
